dandruffAbout 110 bottles of the anti dandruff formula are sold every minute, that counts 29 million a year, bottles of antidandruff shampoo is used. This data  published in daily mail itself suggest how common the problem of dandruff is, and  it won’t be wrong if we say that at some point of time each of us have face the problem of itchy, flaky scalp.

Many shampoo manufacturing companies claim that by using thier anti dandruff shampoo you will surely get rid of the dandruff.

However, whether the use of anti dandruff shampoo helps to git rid of problem, are they safe? Wouldn’t they actually promote flakes?  Should I use medicated antidandruff shampoo, or use natural products or even try house hold remedies? – are common questions that arise in our mind… Let’s try to find out the answer of some of them.

What is or what causes dandruff?

Dandruff or seborrhoeic dermatitis is a condition where the dead skin cell on the scalp shed excessively and rapidly. In some it can also affect the face. Dandruff occurs when skin cells form too fast, meaning more skin cells are shed and become clumps that can be seen by the naked eye; due to various reasons including fungal infection, psoriasis, dermatitis or it could be due to simple dry skin that may lead to itchiness and shedding of flakes.

The problem of dandruff could be severe to mild, in some types of dandruff there is excessive shedding of the flakes where as in few they adhere to the scalp and build up to a form of thick covering.

Stress and diet may also trigger the Dandruff.  ‘This is because stress increases sebum production, and the sebum feeds the yeast.’’ says Dr Emerson Consultant dermatologist Dr Russell Emerson, at The Hove Skin Clinic.

Does Anti- dandruff Shampoo  work?

Trichologist Tony Maleedy says ‘If the underlying cause isn’t treated properly, the scales will quickly return,’ at published news article. The medicated shampoos that are formulated to treat a specific cause of dandruff may help to get rid of dandruff up to certain extent. Shampoos containing zinc pyprithiodne have antibacterial and anti fungal agents thus they treat fungal infection. Others containing Tar is helpful in case of dandruff caused by contact dermatitis or psoriasis.

In case where one formulation fails to give result switching to other formula may help to get dandruff free scalp. Experts advise to use medicated shampoos every day until your dandruff clears up, then just once or twice a week to maintain a clear scalp.

Use medicated shampoo as per given instruction or as guided by the physician or dermatologist.

Does the Use of Anti dandruff shampoo aggravate the problem?
The medication such as Zinc pyrithione present in medicated shampoo controls the condition – suggest trichologist Marilyn Sherlock in a published news article. Expert emphasis on maintaining the regularity and suggest failing to it will bring on the dandruff again.
Again shampoos with ketoconazole should be used no more than twice a week between regular shampoos, as more regular use of shampoo containing ketoconazole may cause skin irritation.
It is advisable to consult dermatologist or your family physician if use of the available formula does not help to solve the problem.‘Should you suffer from severe dandruff for more than six weeks that doesn’t respond to anti-dandruff shampoos, see your GP,’ ‘It may be a more serious problem, such as psoriasis’ says Dr Emerson in a published news article at Daily mail.

The medicated shampoo generally clear the cause like fungus, thus use of some shampoo containing chemicals may clear the yeast but it grows back so one need to maintain the use of anti dandruff shampoo. It’s about controlling the condition rather than curing says expert.

Definitely NOT. Dandruff is an infection and In Ayurveda we can say it is lot more than just infection, We have to treat it for a period of 2 - 3 months so that it doesnt reoccur. Any tailam for psoriasis seems to be effective for dandruff too...

It is true that we spend lots of money on shampoos that don't really work for one reason or another. I had dandruff issues for years and I found it was a result of a deficiency (omega 3). I live in landlocked country. Bought supplements and they worked. Nutrition evaluation needed to help diagnose where problem could be.

This article made me realize that I've been dandruff free since I've been drinking Electrolyzed Reduced Water, so for me hydration must have been the key!

Never had it. If I ever did, I'd try herbs (rosemary, tea tree, etc.) before putting poisonous shampoo on my scalp.
